Many library users under utilize traditional Reference books, but new eReference options are a great way to access material online that was once only available on library shelves.

The following resources are just a small selection of eReference materials that can be found through the library’s web page by clicking on the “All Article Databases & Indexes” link in the second blue box in the center of the page:

Oxford Reference Online

Oxford Reference Online contains about 100 dictionary, language reference, and subject reference works published by Oxford University Press. It is a fully-indexed, cross-searchable database of these books plus an expanding range of key titles from the acclaimed Oxford Companions Series, plus the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations.

Encyclopedia of Medieval Philosophy

This is the newest eReference resource at the library, and it covers all areas of philosophy in the Middle Ages and part of the Renaissance, ranging from 500 to 1500 CE.

Britannica Original Sources

The site includes original or primary source documents, critical selections and acclaimed works across U.S. and World History, Literature, Social Science, Political Science, Law, Science, Mathematics, Religion, Philosophy, and Language.

Oxford English Dictionary (OED)

This resource can be used as a dictionary, thesaurus, and guide for historical usage of words in the English language. The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) is widely regarded as the accepted authority on the English language. It is an unsurpassed guide to the meaning, history, and pronunciation of 600,000 words, past and present, from across the English-speaking world.

Finding Books Using Call Numbers

Using Call Numbers

Have you searched for books in the Millsaps Library Catalog? If you have, then you have seen LC call numbers displayed in your results list. You may be asking yourself, “what is a LC call number”? LC is short for Library of Congress, and it is the type of classification system used by most academic libraries. Call numbers help you locate a book.

Most people are more familiar with the Dewey Decimal classification system, as this is the type of classification used in most public libraries. The most obvious difference is that Dewey Decimal call numbers begin with numbers, and LC call numbers start with an alphabetic code (letters).

Below is an example of how LC and Dewey call numbers differ for the exact same book. The book used in this example is Conversations with Eudora Welty.

Browsing by Subject

Besides finding the particular book you need, the LC classification system is useful for browsing books in a particular subject area. Similar books are grouped together based on this system. For instance, you will find books about world history in the D section. You will find books about the social sciences in the H section.

The Millsaps-Wilson Library will hold its Annual Homecoming Book Sale on Saturday, October 29 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Find fiction, non-fiction, textbooks, and much more. The sale is located in the basement of the library and is open to the public. We hope to see you there!

The Millsaps-Wilson Library continuously adds new materials to the library’s collections, and we will start sharing a selection of the newest titles in this blog.

If you have any trouble locating these items in the library, please ask for help at the front desk. Also, the library showcases the newest books on a bookshelf to the west of the front desk and across from the Digital Media Lab (DML). Check this display area often for interesting reads.

Find Books Fast! Introducing Quick Check Computers

The Millsaps-Wilson Library provides a convenient way to look up books in the library: The Quick Check Computer. The newest Quick Check Computer is a laptop located at the library's front desk. This station is designed to provide an easy way to search for books using the Millsaps Library Catalog.

In addition to the new Quick Check station, a second station is located on the 3rd Floor-West area of the library.

These computers require no personal logins, as they are logged in and ready to search our online catalog. If you have any questions or need help finding a call number, ask a Librarian for assistance.

How do I sign up?

You have several options to sign up for a workshop:

Where are the workshops held?

The Library Workshops are held in the Millsaps Room, which can be found on the top floor of the library on the east side. If you are unsure where to find this room, you can always ask at the front desk

When do the workshops meet?

The workshops meet Tuesdays and Wednesdays each week of the Fall semester, except for weeks when there is a holiday. Each workshop meets for approximately 30 minutes. [Revised: 10/19]

Discover New Databases at the Millsaps-Wilson Library

In 2011, the Millsaps-Wilson Library added new databases to help support student research, and below are introductions to two of them. At the end of this post are instructions on how to access these new databases through the library’s website. We hope that you find these databases useful, and if you have any questions please let us know.

Education Research Complete – EBSCO

Students in education, psychology, social work, and biology, just to name a few, can find full text journal articles through this EBSCO database. Education Research Complete provides indexing and abstracts for more than 2,100 journals, as well as full text for more than 1,200 journals, and includes full text for nearly 500 books and monographs.

Westlaw Campus Research

Westlaw Campus Research covers thousands of publications, most of which are available in full text. It is especially useful for legal research, as well as for current news coverage and business. Many newspapers from major cities are available through this database, and regional newspapers include the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the New Orleans Times-Picayune, and the Memphis Commercial Appeal.

On the library’s homepage, find the second (middle) blue shaded box in the center of the screen. Find the link for “All Article Databases & Indexes.” You can either click on this link to see a complete listing of all library databases, or click on the appropriate letter if you know the name of the database you would like to use.

In the Subject Guides/Topic Guides:

The Subject Guides and Topic Guides can be found in the bottom blue shaded box in the center of the library’s homepage screen. These drop down menus offer you the option to browse resources for a specific subject, major, or class.

The popularity of eBooks continues to grow, and there are more choices in eBook readers and ways to access eBook content than ever before. With the rise of smart phones and tablets, eBook enthusiasts are gravitating toward products that provide good readability along with features such as Wi-Fi and apps.

One website that offers free eBook content is Project Gutenberg: http://www.gutenberg.org

Due to the expiration of copyright on many of the books on the site, the books are able to be freely reproduced and downloaded. Project Gutenberg offers content in a variety of file formats, and eBooks are available for devices such as the Kindle, iPad, iPhone, Android, and others.

In addition to device specific setup, Project Gutenberg offers a mobile site: http://m.gutenberg.org/

This simplified site is a user friendly way to browse and search for eBook content on a mobile device.
